Ward 9 city councillor Hilary Payne is supporting a push for bike lanes along Rhodes Dr. in Windsor.
Local cyclist Heather Pizzuti is calling for bike lanes after almost being hit by a transport truck last week in that section of the city.
Payne says the area is strictly commercial, meaning anyone riding their bike is either going to or coming from work.
Bike lanes on Rhodes Dr. is one of 13 projects the city is submitting to the province, which has made $40.5-million available to municipalities for commuter cyclist routes.
Payne says this would be a perfect fit for the funding. "It is a classic case, if there was ever a commuter route, that's it. If there was ever a chance to do something about it, this is it. It's not going to be a hugely costly project either. It'll be a very good test case for how we can benefit commuter cyclists on a street that really, really needs it."
"It's a high traffic area and bikes lanes are a must," says Payne. "I can certainly support Rhodes Dr. and places like that where there's a absolute demonstrable need for real commuter cycling. I'm very hopeful that Rhodes Dr. will make the list there because I think it'll be a real marker for a successful commuter project."
