'Choose your Ride' is the theme for this year's Red Ribbon Campaign launched by Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
In Windsor-Essex, the campaign was launched at Anderson's Funeral Home on Ouellette Avenue in Windsor to highlight that a hearse should not be an option.
Organizers are asking drivers to plan ahead and not be impaired by drugs or alcohol when they get behind the wheel.
Jessica Ondejko died in May 2008 after being struck head-on by a drunk driver in Amherstburg. Her sister Jennifer Musson says eight years later, it still hurts.
"It never goes away, you are shattered and it is not a repairable wound," says Musson. "You learn to live broken but life goes on and you try to find the happy but there is always that sadness."
Through tears, Musson said she wished her sister was still here. "There is so much I could share with her and so much she has missed out on. I just want her back."
Windsor Police Staff Sergeant Dave Kigar pointed out although there appears to be a shift in society's attitude toward impaired driving, one fatal drunk driving crash is too much.
There are 1500 fatal impaired driving crashes in Canada every year. It is the leading cause of 'criminal deaths' in Canada.
