Children First is raising awareness for Children's Mental Health Week.
The group says as many as one in five children in Ontario experience some form of mental health problem — five out of six of them won't get the help they need.
Director Lori Kempe says the agency provided help to nearly 1,900 kids in Windsor-Essex in 2016.
She says there are many reasons for a families to seek out help -— and parents need to know it's there.
"Families need to know there's a resource for them and there's a safe place to go," says Kempe. "The staff here at children first are very passionate and compassionate and work really well our families in helping them be the best parent they can be, which isn't perfect all the time, and that's ok."
Children First offers programs to help children with mental health issues up to age six.
Kempe says services range from counselling to assessments — with many groups designed to work with both the child and the parents.
"Groups that we offer, one being the Circle of Security program, and that an attachment based program where it looks at the child coming in and out of the circle. When you need to be there to support the child and when you need the child to be able to explore their surroundings."
Children's Mental Health Ontario will be lighting landmarks like the CN Tower in Toronto and Caesars Windsor green to mark the cause from Monday May 1st until Sunday May 7th.
