Chatham-Kent Council has voted in favour of asking the province for some help with the 401.
In a vote of 17-1, council is asking the province to erect centre barriers on the highway because of multiple deaths from crossover accidents.
Councillor Leon LeClair voted in favour and says the crashes affect the municipality.
"There has been a lot of back-up accidents, then the detours are going through our municipality and our infrastructure is just not set up."
LeClair says when there is a 401 closure, traffic heads into the municipality.
"I supported the motion, anything for safety and again it is the province, sometimes you feel slighted and the municipality is not getting its fair share of dollars for our roads and such."
He says Chatham-Kent isn't getting its fair share of provincial dollars for roads.
"It is about safety and there has been too much and most of the accidents and a lot of accidents involves our whole municipality and there is an impact on commerce and it is an infrastructure issue."
Although LeClair is not overly optimistic the province will come through, he says the municipality needs to do what it can to raise awareness of the issue.
Councillor Derek Robertson voted against the motion because of a procedural issue, not because he doesn't support the barriers.
