Leamington's mayor-elect has had a change of heart when it comes to retail marijuana stores in her town.
Municipalities across Ontario have until January 22 to decide if they want to opt-in or opt-out of allowing retail marijuana stores within their boundaries.
During the municipal election campaign, Hilda MacDonald indicated she was opposed to the idea of a marijuana store in Leamington.
But she says, now, she's done more research on the subject since that question was posed.
"I looked into it a little bit more, that was a surprising question the day I was asked that because it had just been handed down from the province that we would be able to say yeah or nay," says MacDonald. "But I looked further into it and I like the LCBO model."
She says her concern over the idea of a smaller corner store where there would not be as much control of what's sold compared to the LCBO model introduced by the previous provincial Liberal government.
MacDonald says the issue is still up for discussion among councillors.
The recreational use of marijuana became legal across Canada on October 17th. Currently you can only buy marijuana online through the Ontario Cannabis Store.
