Cedi Osman added 21 points for the Cavs, who snapped a three-game skid. Cleveland is still second-to-last in the NBA's East at 18-and-53.
Andre Drummond delivered 21 points and 21 rebounds for Detroit, which gave star forward Blake Griffin the night off.
Wayne Ellington led the Pistons with 25 points, including 7-of-13 from three.
Detroit dropped to 36-and-34, good for sixth in the East.
