Canterbury College at the University of Windsor is expanding its residence space.
The affiliate of the university will start construction almost immediately on a new three-story building where three older houses are being taken down.

College Principal Dr. Gordon Drake says it will take about a year to put up the $5 to 6-million residence.
He says the new building will add 32 single apartments and 30 rooms for shared accommodation.

"Our current apartment accommodation in Geoffrey Fisher Hall is not adequate, we have a waiting list for people to get in. So there's certainly an urgent need for more accommodation of that type. And also for individual student rooms we are full"
Dr. Drake says the residence will be well suited for the area.
"I think it's just a beautiful new building. As soon as we saw that concept we knew this was what we wanted. It would fit with the rest. It would fit with this building, it's very much in the style of the architecture of this building and for future growth it sets the pattern"
Dr. Drake says during construction the college will have reduced residence space, but when complete they'll have 180 rooms.
A name has not been selected for the new residence building.
The new building will be separated into 5 "houses" inside to maintain the residence style it replaces.
He says international students are a major driver of the need for the additional accommodation.
