Most Canadian travellers are planning trips not that far from home.
An RBC Insurance survey says of the 79% of Canadians planning on travelling this year — the majority of whom are planning a trip within Canada. The survey puts it at 60%.
Sarah Hupalo with Goliger's Travel Plus in Windsor is seeing so-called staycations gaining in popularity. She says the poor standing of the Canadian dollar against the American greenback may be keeping Canadians home.
However, Hupalo says there's lot going on in Canada that people want to check out.
"We're seeing a lot more interest in Quebec this year, possibly because I think Montreal is having a big birthday; lots of celebrations going on in that province," says Hupalo. "Quite a bit of interest for British Columbia."
Hupalo says while the loonie's weaker standing against the American dollar may be a factor, it's not necessarily always cheaper to take a trip within Canada instead of abroad.
"It would cost you more sometimes to spend a week in Toronto or British Columbia than it would to maybe do an all inclusive in the Caribbean, but it's the experience — it's something unique and different to discover their own different areas of the country," says Hupalo.
Hupalo thinks people may finally be coming around to the great travel destinations in Canada.
"It's quite remarkable. I think, people don't realize what we have in this country until they step out and go see it; there's a lot, we have a lot to offer," says Hupalo. "I would say this year more than I've noticed in many, many years."
The survey shows 59% of Canadians travelling within the country will use their car while only 53% of travellers leaving the province will get travel insurance.
