A veteran International Olympic Committee (IOC) member believes the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo will be postponed due to COVID-19.
Canadian member Dick Pound of Montreal told The Canadian Press in a phone interview he expects the July 24 start of the Olympics to be pushed back.
"We're all reading the tea leaves and so on, but the Japanese themselves are talking about postponing. A lot of National Olympic Committees and countries are calling for a postponement," says Pound.
Canada called for a postponement on Sunday night after announcing Canadian athletes would not be participating.
A joint statement from the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) says the difficult decision has been made not to send Canadian teams to the Olympic and Paralympics games in the summer of 2020.
