It may be only one year older, but Canadian Club's 41-year-old whisky is the new champion.
That's according to Global Brand Ambassador Tish Harcus - and it's been named Canadian Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray's Whisky Bible for 2018
Harcus spoke with AM800's Patty Handysides on The Afternoon News — she says it's a big honour for a new Windsor-made whisky, a new whisky that's actually a very old one, but it's not the first time a find like this has been made.
"We did it last year, we launched a 40-year, which was the oldest Canadian Whisky every launched and this year we topped ourselves," she says.
"This stuff was laid down to rest way back in 1977 and the master blender at the time, he didn't really put a lot of notes into it," says Harcus. "He used saturated rye barrels and then he passed [died] so we didn't know what to do with it. I came on, I've been with the brand 30-years this year, and when I came on it was 10-years old."
She says when whiskey isn't barreled correctly, you might not get a good batch. Harcus tells AM800 News, the master blender, knew what he was doing. The 40-year Canadian Club flew off the shelves.
"It would hit the shelves and be gone within an hour, we had 7,000 bottles of 40-year and it was all gone within 10-weeks," says Harcus. "This year we have 12,000 bottles of the 41-year-old, so hopefully, if you didn't get a chance to get the 40-year-old, you'll get a chance to get a 41-year-old."
The new CC Chronicles, a 41 year old Canadian Club Whiskey, will be in the LCBO shortly, but it won't be cheap, a bottle will run $299.99.
