A Canadian man has been arrested and faces a federal charge of people into the U.S. illegally through an underground railway tunnel between Detroit and Windsor.
Prosecutors say 53-year-old Juan Antonio Garcia-Jimenez, a naturalized Canadian resident from Guatemala, was arrested Wednesday by U.S. Border Patrol agents and made an initial appearance before a federal magistrate. A bond hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
Prosecutors allege that Garcia-Jimenez took a Mexican worker to the tunnel in March and told him when to enter it to avoid cargo trains. The man was apprehended on the Detroit side.
They say four other people apprehended in Detroit last month say they paid Garcia-Jimenez $1,500 each to be taken to the tunnel.
