The President of the Windsor and District Labour Council is applauding the federal government for banning imports of asbestos.
Ottawa is moving to ban all products containing asbestos by 2018.
The comprehensive ban is designed to include construction materials and brake pads that currently use the cancer-causing agent.
Brian Hogan says the labour council here kept up the pressure, holding a news conference recently where survivors of the victims of asbestos disease told their stories.
Hogan says the announcement is certainly positive, but it's certainly bittersweet for the survivors.
He says the federal government has to ensure all levels of government participate in the building registry of locations containing asbestos.
Hogan says he hopes Ottawa continues to listen as it develops the legislation and regulations, "that they would then look to stakeholders, survivors, ordinary people, union health and safety activists that this is the draft, this is what we want to do any ideas how to beef it up or tweak it and continue having discussions"
Hogan says one unfortunate fact is that, with the latency period for asbestos, cases will continue to develop for years even though the ban goes into effect in 2018.
