LaSalle council is backing a neighbourhood petition to have Canada Post relocate one of its community mailboxes.
A letter going off to the national postal service will recommend the community mailbox be shifted from the corner of Ellis Street to the middle of the cul-de-sac on one of the Serenity Circle boulevards.
The neighbourhood is underdevelopment and residents aren't happy with its temporary location or the planned permanent location which would keep it on Ellis Street.
Serenity Circle resident Stephen Shanfield started a petition to have the community box moved.
"You know, the more we talked about it the more we found that there were incidents that involved people living on the street getting out on Ellis St. to pick up their mail and almost being hit by cars," says Shanfield. "I'm very proud of this council and I'm very impressed with this town because safety has been demonstrated to be a priority and they're willing to listen to legitimate complaints."
LaSalle Mayor Ken Antaya says while residents were concerned the Ellis Street location would pose a safety risk, he says there really is no perfect location.
"When you take a look at putting it on Serenity Circle and the piling of snow around it — that's a safety issue," says Antaya.
It's now up to Canada Post to decide where the new community mailbox will end up as the developer completes construction of the neighbourhood.
