The Janes Walk movement is aimed at getting people to know their neighbourhood better

A global festival aimed at getting people to know their neighbourhood better will take place in Windsor the first weekend in May.

The Jane's Walk movement takes place in cities around the world in honour of urbanist Jane Jacobs.

Sarah Morris is the Windsor organizer for Jane's Walk.

She says the idea is to celebrate and explore neighbourhoods.

"It's celebrating Jane Jacobs who was an author and urbanist from Toronto and her idea was cities are made of neighbourhoods.  So we want people to be expiring their neighbourhoods meeting their neighbours and seeing their neighbourhoods in different ways"

She says they had six walks last year and they're hoping to have more this time.

"If you wanted to host a Jane's Walk, you would be showing your neighbourhood in either talking about the history or the culture or the environment or the food or whatever, so we would like to have as many different Jane's Walks as possible this year"

Morris says the goal is to have all the walks registered by the end of April.

"Just so we can make sure all of the promotion is centralized and ready to go so everyone is aware of all the different Jane's Walks that are available, anyone can host them these are free walks and they're volunteer run.  We really encourage everybody to participate"

For more information about the event or to host your own walk head to the local Jane's Walk website.
