Bill Peters is no longer head coach of the Calgary Flames after submitting his resignation Friday morning.
Flames GM Brad Treliving announced the move during a news conference Friday afternoon after the end of an investigation into allegations Peters directed a racial slur at a former player.
Former Windsor Spitfire Akim Aliu tweeted that a former coach in 2009-10 used a racial slur against him while a member of the American Hockey League's Rockford IceHogs.
The 30-year-old Aliu, a player of colour, never referred to Peters by name, but did reference Calgary's airport code "YYC" when writing about the alleged coach involved in the matter.
Aliu then confirmed to TSN that Peters used a racial slur repeatedly to complain about his choice of pre-game music. Two Rockford players confirmed Aliu's account to TSN.
Treliving confirms he learned of the allegations during the Flames games in Pittsburgh. Treliving says he sat with Peters on the flight from Pittsburgh to Buffalo and questioned the coach about the alleged incident during a long conversation.
The Flames GM says he has had two conversations with Aliu since the allegations surfaced.
"The subject matter that we've been dealing with over the last three days is difficult, it's hard and it does not, in anyway, reflect the core values of the Calgary Flames," Treliving said during his news conference.
Treliving says Peters' resignation concludes the team's investigation into the matter and the matter is being turned over to the league.
Peters had served as head coach of the Flames since April 2018.
