Windsor police have updated the tragic crash where a young child was struck and critically injured by a city bus.
It happened around 6 p.m. Saturday night on Prince Road near Barrymore Lane.
Sergeant Steve Betteridge says the child may have bolted out onto the street.
"Our initial information does indicate that the young child was not familiar with the area and actually may have darted out into oncoming traffic, which is obviously a very dangerous situation for everyone involved"
Sergeant Betteridge says the age of the victim is definitely a factor in what happened.
"I would question even how much familiarity there is when you're dealing with a 4-year-old, so this is a very young child who definitely we're satisfied was not familiar with the area"
He says charges against the bus driver are not likely in the circumstances.
"It would be case by case, but I would agree with that. Generically speaking if that was the scenario and all evidence points that way at the end of the day at the conclusion of the investigation then yes, that would probably lead toward something where no charges would be warranted whatsoever"
Sergeant Betteridge says because of privacy rules, they can't say where the child lived or if the child is still in a Windsor hospital.
He says it remains an active investigation and police would like to speak with anyone who witnessed the crash who has not yet spoken with an officer.
Transit Windsor says it will not be commenting until after the police investigation is complete.
