With $108-million in new construction so far this year, a building boom continues in the town of Lakeshore.
In fact, the number of building permits issued is up more than 30% over the same period last year, which was up 23% over 2015.
Town Councillor Steven Wilder thinks he has a good idea of what's behind the growth. "I think it's a reflection of the housing market. What I understand is a number of families from the Greater Toronto Area that are moving down, recognizing the advantages financially, but also lifestyle."
While he wants to see the growth continue, Wilder says infrastructure is going to need to grow with the housing market. "What my hope is, by sending these building stats to the county, is that they're aware of the growth that's going on so that they can properly address our infrastructure needs in Lakeshore, as the largest municipality in Windsor-Essex County, as well as the fastest growing."
Wilder expects the growth to continue as more people recognize Lakeshore as a good place to live, work and play.
