Renaming a bridge of the Herb Gray Parkway for a fallen LaSalle police officer is now in the hands of the provincial government.
LaSalle Council has approved renaming the Sandwich West Parkway Bridge in honour of Constable Robert Carrick.
He was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute call in 1969.
LaSalle Councillor Mike Akpata spearheaded the process and says the town has done its part.
"The next stage is to complete the package and present it to the Ministry of Transportation for them to approve our request hopefully. Very rarely does the MTO say no. Then set up a date to name the bridge."
Akpata says the bridge is a prominent one in the community.
"It's the Sandwich Parkway Bridge, the public may commonly know, if you're leaving LaSalle on the Herb Gray Parkway look to the right and you'll see the outlet mall. The bridge directly in front of the mall is the one we've chosen."
He says it's important to honour the people who have given their lives for the community.
"It keeps their name in the forefront of the community and once again reminds community members there's a sacrifice for the safety we have and it's been paid by the ultimate sacrifice by these on-duty police officers."
Akpata hopes the MTO will complete the approval in time for the naming ceremony to take place during next year's Police Week in May.
