A group aimed at helping the transgendered community in Windsor has fallen victim to a crime.
W.E Trans Support at 111 Wyandotte St. West was broken into Tuesday night and suspects shattered the window, broke the door and stole a locked safe.
W.E Trans believes it was a targeted attack stemming from the Pride flag raising issue at local public schools.
"We are out about $800 in donations and about $1,000 worth of store cards that we provide to our youth that are facing homelessness or experiencing homelessness while we try to assist them in accessing housing supports," says group founder Jayce Carver.
Despite the break-in, Carver says this just adds fuel to the fire to continue raising awareness.
"What I know is that we are not going back in any closets," she says. "It has taken a long time since the initial gay rights movement for trans identities to be visible as part of that movement."
Although Carver admits to feeling violated, she wants the community to know the centre is still safe and no one was hurt.
The group is evaluating whether to move to Ottawa St. where the WE Pride Fest is now being held, but no decisions have been made.
Since opening last May, there have been 2,100 visits to WE Trans Support.
The centre is closed Wednesday but it plans to re-open on Thursday, February 21.
