Windsor city councillor Rino Bortolin has sat in on his first Windsor Police Services Board meeting.
Bortolin joins the board after being appointed by Windsor city council earlier this month to replace Joanne Gignac who sat on the board since 2011.
Following the meeting, Bortolin told reporters he did a lot of reading and felt like he was well prepared for his first meeting.
He says he takes the role of board governance very seriously.
"I think as issues come up, I'm going to approach it the same way I have for the last four or five years at council approaching it with the same intensity, asking the questions, following up, looking for more and more explanations and seeing if we can do things better," says Bortolin.
Bortolin says he will be asking questions and looking for more explanations.
"I take the role of board governance very seriously so everything that we're doing here isn't going to be different than how I approach everything in the last four years," says Bortolin.
He says residents have been reaching out to him with police matters and concerns.
"I've been dealing with police quite a bit over the last few years with issues whether it be meet and greets with residents whether it be those types of things, public meetings, having them come to things like Coffee with the Cop," says Bortolin. "All of those things have probably half of the calls that I deal with the regular basis have to do with some sort of policing issues."
Windsor mayor Drew Dilkens is the chair of the board while Amherstburg mayor Aldo DiCarlo vice chairs.
Michael Ray and Dr. Gaston Franklyn are also on the board along with members of the police service.
