With record high water levels on the Detroit River, boaters are being asked to take extra precautions on fireworks night.
The city of Windsor is asking boaters to keep their speed below 10-knots and stay at least 100 feet from the shoreline due to deep water along the shoreline hiding obstructions like docks and pilings, much faster currents, and colder water temperatures.
Windsor Port Authority's Peter Berry tells AM800 News the water way may look clear, but looks can be deceiving.
"They're hard to see, especially at night when you're leaving the fireworks or if it's a little bit overcast," he says. "We want to warn the boaters to be especially vigilant along the shoreline."
Berry says anywhere between 300 and 600 boaters make it down to the waterfront to watch the annual fireworks display and they can create a huge wake when they all leave.
"A group of 10 or 15 boats, the wakes not that bad — a group of 300 boats — we're going to have some problems if you're walking along shoreline," says Berry.
Berry says law enforcement from both sides of the border will be out in full force to make sure everyone stays safe.
The Ford Fireworks show begins at 9:55 p.m. on Monday night.
