Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo has returned to the Essex-Windsor Solid Waste Authority's Board of Directors.
DiCarlo returns to the board as its composition changes for this year. Last year, the city had the majority of representatives — but this year it belongs to the county.
DiCarlo hopes the board stays the course this year.
"There's not a lot of contentious issues to deal with there," says DiCarlo. "The budget is pretty subscribed. We continue to struggle with costs compared to jurisdictions like Michigan that are just a lot cheaper in taking garbage then we are."
DiCarlo says a way to maintain reasonable rates is to take trash from other regions, but the public is against the idea.
"From the residents I've spoken to on the issue, it continues to be a touchy subject, it would reduce the life on the landfill and it's just something people don't want to deal with," says DiCarlo.
Essex Mayor Ron McDermott is the board chair for 2017.
