The 63", 310lb Drew Desjarlais played for the University of Windsor Lancers last season
A major opportunity for a local football player.
After going undrafted in this past weekend's NFL draft, Belle River native Drew Desjarlais received invites from both the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers to attend upcoming rookie camps.
The offensive lineman says the Steelers called him right after the draft.
"Obviously incredibly excited about that," says Desjarlais. "That's kind of what got the whole ball rolling. It's crazy to even think they've got my phone number, that's for sure. Football is on the horizon, for sure, it's exciting."
He says he'll be heading to New York first. "I'll be able to go to New York first, gain all that experience, and if it doesn't work out in New York I'll be able to carry momentum into the next week (In Pittsburgh) which is actually pretty nice. Now, instead of one shot, I get two kicks, so it's kind of nice."
The 22-year-old is also eligible for this week's CFL draft where he's projected to be picked in the first round.
"The combine was a great opportunity. I was kind of flying under the radar a bit and, given the opportunity at the combine, I performed how I thought I would. I had outstanding numbers with the best overall combine score there and it certainly paid off."
