Both campuses of Windsor Regional Hospital are at capacity.
Hospital CEO David Musyj says the hospital is dealing with an increase in influenza as well as respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses.
He says the spike occurred late last year and early this year resulting in an additional 37 "over flow" beds throughout both campuses.
Musyj says the height of influenza season has yet to hit the region.
"We're at least a week if not four weeks away from that, so as a result everyday the patients are still coming. Our average length of stay is generally five days, the patients we're seeing are going to be here longer than five days because they are acutely ill," says Musyj.
Musyj says the hospital continues to experience high numbers of admitted patients and high acuity in the emergency department.
He says this is not only a Windsor problem, other hospitals across the province are also dealing with increases.
Musyj says there is a chance the increases could delay or cancel scheduled surgeries.
He's reminding the public to get the flu shot and visit your family physician or attend a walk-in clinic before heading to the emergency department.
