Losing weight is one of the most common New Year’s resolutions every year.
For some that means joining a gym.
The Better Business Bureau recommends asking some questions before signing any contracts.
Communications Manager for BBB Southwestern Ontario, Ashley Casselman, says if you are signing up to a gym make sure to read the fine print.
"Some might give you an out if you pay a $99 cancelation fee. Those are questions you are going to want to ask before you sign up for one as well. In Ontario you do have ten days to cancel the contract for any reason, but once those ten days are up you are bound by the terms of the contract."
She says joining a gym is an investment for your health, but also your wallet.
"If a gym either never opens or just closes suddenly, a lot of time you are out that money you gave to them. So you are going to want to avoid putting a large sum of money down if you don't have to. Especially if it is a new gym and it hasn't been established in your area very long."
Casselman adds, when choosing a gym make sure it is the most beneficial for your lifestyle.
"One of the things you are going to want to look for is their location. Do they have multiple locations? If you are working shift work you will want one that is open 24-hours. Do they offer personal fitness training? Is that something that is going to be included in your contact or is that going to be extra?"
In 2016 the BBB received almost 200 complaints about gyms and health clubs, putting the industry in the top list of most complained about businesses.
