Two people are in hospital with smoke inhalation following a house fire in Tecumseh.
Fire Prevention Officer Bob Hamilton says it was disappointing to find no smoke alarms in the four-level backsplit home on Grace Rd.
"There are four levels and not one of the levels had a smoke alarm," he says. "In this day and age with the public education and the knowledge that we have with smoke alarms saving lives, there is no need for people to not have them anymore."
Firefighters were called around 8am Monday to the home between Little River Blvd and Riverside Drive.
Hamilton says the two people in hospital are in their late 60s.
"We are hoping for the best, but you never know with smoke inhalation, it can hit people differently."
He emphasizes there is no excuse not to have a smoke alarm in your home.
"It is so disappointing as fire prevention officers we are out there and we are getting the message across, the whole county is the same--whatever department you are with, people are still not getting it, " he says. "It is the attitude that they never thought it would happen to me."
By law, people need to have a smoke alarm on each level of their home.
The fire was contained to the bedroom with smoke and water damage throughout the rest of the home.
The Ontario Fire Marshall has been called in.
