You may be seeing something new on the Detroit River this summer--tiki boats.
Aloha Tiki Tours of Detroit is launching tiki bar boats beginning May 25th to mid-September from Detroit and St. Clair Shores.
Co-owner Nick Blaszcyk says the company provides the captain and people just need to bring the beverages, food and snacks.
"People are really excited, tikis are in, people love the tropics, the island, we are bringing Hawaii to Detroit," he says. "We were just looking for something new to bring to the city because we want to keep bringing people downtown and to the city and interacting and we came across these tiki boats and we thought what a better place than the Detroit River."
He points out they are coast guard certified and the captains are trained.
"It is just a private charter boat for hire," he says. "It is a tiki boat on the water, grab 2 to 6 people, we provide the captain and we go up and down the Detroit River."
A two-hour boat tour costs between $250-$300.
The Aloha Tiki Tours website has been up for three days and Blaszcyk says the response has been overwhelming
