A local skateboarder is going to be immortalized at the Atkinson Skate Park.
The 'Barron Bowl' will act as a memorial to Ryan Barron who passed away after being hit by a vehicle in British Columbia.
Windsor council has approved the project and the 'Friends 4 Atkinson' will now begin fundraising for the $100,000 concrete bowl.
Rob Bondy is with the group and says Barron was loved by his fellow skaters and this is their way to pay tribute.
"There's been an emphasis to build a bowl at Atkinson for some time and a little over a year ago or so we lost a member of our community who moved out to British Columbia, Ryan Barron, and it kind of became a push within the community to build that bowl in his honour and name it 'The Barron Bowl'."
He says they're looking forward to getting started.
"The majority of the people within the skateboard community are friends and family of Ryan and it's a really great day being told that we can go forward with this project and begin the fundraising in earnest and sort of make this vision come to form."
Bondy adds, he's confident they'll be able to raise the money.
"This is not a new thing for 'Friends 4 Atkinson'. That's a skate park that was built in two phases by just a bunch of little, old ladies basically. They're no stranger to this and there's a lot of community support from various unions and just individuals who want to see this project to forward."
If the concrete bowl becomes a reality, it would be the first of its kind in Essex County.
The 'Friends 4 Atkinson' hope to begin construction in 2019.
