The Asian Tiger mosquito has been found in Windsor-Essex.
The Health Unit says the adult specimen of the invasive species, known as the "Aedes albopictus" mosquito was identified through the annual mosquito surveillance program in Windsor.
It tested negative for both Zika and the West Nile Virus.
“There is no change in risk for Zika virus in our community and the Aedes albopictus mosquito found tested negative for Zika virus and West Nile virus. The discovery of the Aedes albopictus again this year is an important reminder to everyone that we should continue to protect ourselves and our families from mosquito bites,” says Dr. Wajit Ahmed, Medical Officer of Health.
The Asian Tiger is an aggressive daytime biter, peaking in the early morning and late afternoon and they typically lay eggs in or near standing water.
Residents are encouraged to remove water from their properties and use bug spray with DEET.
