Windsor Police Service is reminding the public to take precautions when buying or selling items online.
Police were called to Sandwich Street North near Alma Street in Amherstburg at 9:45 a.m. Thursday for an alleged robbery.
According to police, a man arranged to buy an item from an online seller in a public location.
When he arrived, police say the man selling the item threatened the victim and demanded money.
The man gave the victim an empty box during the exchange and fled the scene without further incident, according to police.
Sergeant Steve Betteridge says the man was later arrested and no one was hurt, but it's an opportunity to remind residents to be cautious when meeting someone from the internet to buy or sell an item.
"Number one, when at all possible research and find out exactly who you're dealing with. Quite often it a stranger," he says.
Betteridge says never go alone.
"We recommend you don't meet them alone and you bring someone else with you. Meet them during the day in a populated area where there are lots of people."
He says cameras are something that should be factored in when picking a location to make a sale.
"A location you know has some good quality video surveillance outside; that's just something to protect yourself," he says.
Betteridge says the incident is a rare occurrence, but if put in a robbery situation, always comply and call police when it's safe.
Police arrested a 24-year-old Amherstburg man near Brock Street and Gore Street shortly after the incident.
He's been charged with robbery.
