Area schools are getting ready for the Memorial Cup, being hosted in Windsor.
On Thursday, 89 classes from 41 schools in Windsor-Essex learned which Canadian Hockey League team they will be following for the reminder of the season. It's part of the Memorial Cup legacy project.
Each class will prepare a display board highlighting the history of the team, geographic facts and military history.
Grade 5 student Emma O'Neil attends Holy Name Elementary School in Essex. Her class will be studying the Victoria Royals of the WHL.
She says she's looking forward to researching the team and its players.
"I haven't really heard of this team before. It looks like they're a very good team and it will be fun to learn about them," says O'Neil.
Classmate Luke Schmidt can't wait to get the project started.
"I'm looking forward to researching about our team and finding out what the Memorial Cup is all about," says Schmidt.
The displays will be set up at the WFCU Centre during the Memorial Cup.
The classes whose team makes the Memorial Cup, will be special guests of the organizing committee and will attend the tournament.
