A delay in the construction of a new roundabout in Old Sandwich Town in Windsor.
The project was scheduled to be completed by September 1st, but an archaeological dig at the site has uncovered several artifacts from a former Native-Canadian settlement.
City Engineer Mark Winterton says construction was actually ahead of schedule, but work has been put on hold while a more extensive dig is carried out.
"The delay is going to cause some headaches for back to school time," says Winterton. "The idea was that we were going to get this opened up by the time school started and we'll see what we can do, but there's not a lot of activity out there right now because of this whole archaeological thing. The contractor has done almost as much as they can do until the archaeology issue is dealt with."
Winterton says the city hopes to have the road re-opened by the end of September. "We have to respect the process and go through that. The contractor has been fulfilling all of their contractual requirements to complete the job. So it's not anything related to the actual contract itself. It's specific to the archaeological issues.
Archaeology was factored into the project's original $850,000 budget, but a more extensive dig will drive that price up.
The roundabout is located at intersection of Sandwich St., Riverside Dr. W., Rosedale Ave. and University Ave. W.
