A stretch of trails between Amherstburg and Essex will not allow horses.
The board of the Essex Region Conservation Authority decided to hold off on allowing horses on the Cypher Systems Greenway Trail.
A survey of 850 residents shows horseback riding is in demand for the trail, but it can't happen until some changes are made.
Director of Conservation Services Kevin Money tells AM800 News the Cypher Systems trail between Essex and Amherstburg lacks the facilities needed to host them safely.
"Our current policy for the time being, until we have facilities in place to allow for parking of trailers and additional horse facilities," he says.
Currently, horses are permitted on the Chrysler Greenway Trail but Money says the Cypher Systems trail between Essex and Amherstburg lacks the facilities needed to host them safely.
"We don't have parking for those big trucks and trailers right now. We don't want to cause a safety problem by them parking on the road or creating a hazard that way," he says.
According to Money, ERCA isn't ruling it out in the future and is currently raising funds to make the trail and surrounding roadways safe.
"It's a very expensive to build a parking lot to that size and magnitude so we're seeking those corporate sponsorships through our foundation in order to build those facilities," he added.
The conservation authority currently manages more than 100km of trails throughout Windsor-Essex.
