The future of the Amherstburg Sharks swim club is up in the air.
With the sale of Centennial Park to be the site of the new General Amherst High School, the outdoor Lions Pool is closing.
Yvette Erickson is with the swimming club and says the town has no formal plan in place to replace the pool which would force the Sharks to swim elsewhere.
The swim team is make up of about 50 members ranging in age from six to 16.
Erickson says the uncertainty is tough on the kids.
"We just want to make sure that they're aware that we would like a pool and that we are disrupting our services," she says. "Our children don't have, so far, a place to swim this summer and depending on how long it takes them to build another pool we could have disruption of services for three to five years. We don't know. A pool doesn't get built overnight."
Erickson says some families are already leaving town to swim in LaSalle, Harrow or Windsor which means money is spent elsewhere.
She believes keeping kids active should be a priority and taking the pool away is a step in the wrong direction.
"The swim team practices three nights a week for an hour. So it's an hour three nights a week that they're not on their electronics and they have a really good rapport with each other and they've all been friends. These kids have been swimming together for four or five summers."
The swimming club made a presentation to Amherstburg council Monday night.
While he couldn't go into detail, Mayor Aldo DiCarlo assured the group the town hasn't forgot about the pool and is looking into funding and interim solutions.
