The Town of Amherstburg is considering allowing residents to have chickens in town.
The cause is being pushed by 12-year-old resident William Brush.
The Grade 7 student at Amherstburg Public School made his case to council Monday night, calling for a zoning change to allow residential chickens, by touting the health benefits of having fresh eggs close to home.
Brush thinks three or four chickens per home would be reasonable. "I just think organic things are better for you, but low income families can't afford that — so if they're allowed to do this then it will save them a lot of money in the long run."
Brush says the idea to push for residential chickens hatched at breakfast. "We were at breakfast and we were eating eggs and the topic of chickens came up and we just decided we want them. We wanted to eat their eggs for breakfast."
Council deferred a decision until it receives a report from administration on the matter, which is expected by the end of the summer.
