Amherstburg Mayor Aldo DiCarlo has been hearing from concerned resident wondering why buses of temporary foreign workers are shopping at grocery stores in the town.
The frustration comes after a photo was seen circulating on social media, but DiCarlo says in the post, it says they came from Leamington and Kingsville but that is not true.
He says someone working for the town was able to confirm the information.
"Coincidentally we had someone working for the town around that managed to get that information just out of curiosity," says DiCarlo.
He feels this isn’t new, that migrant workers have shopped at Amherstburg grocery stores before.
"This likely isn't the first time that's happened," says DiCarlo. "I'm sure it's happened before COVID probably as well but with everything going on, it's just being noticed at this time and people are concerned."
He says he understands the concern but adds it's important for residents to have factual information.
"The rumours that they're all coming from Leamington and Kingsville which obviously are the municipalities with the higher numbers, in this particular case, the picture that somebody posted in social media just was not accurate," says DiCarlo. "Those buses did not come from those municipalities."
"There's just so much speculation on where people are coming from and even that they might have not been tested or tested negative," says DiCarlo. "So to me they're like anybody else who's shopping, they have every right too."
He says if residents are concerned, they should continue to follow the safety measures that have been put in place.
"People are going to take notice of these things but again you got thousands of people and even with the ones taking into consideration that the ones that have tested positive, that means there's still thousands who are negative and they may very well be the people out shopping," says DiCarlo.
After talking to residents about the issue, DiCarlo says they are concerned with the number of migrant workers who have tested positive for COVID-19.
