A funding boost for a new bridge has been announced for the Town of Amherstburg.
The municipality is receiving more than $1.7-million dollars from the federal government and $1.1-million for the provincial government to replace Bridge 3012 on 5th Concession North.
Mayor Aldo DiCarlo says the bridge is over River Canard and is heavily used by motorists.
"It is, let's call it a shortcut into Windsor and so that road is very heavily travelled," says DiCarlo. "It's really crumbling and in bad shape so it is in dire need of replacement."
He says the roads leading to the bridge entrance will also be rebuilt and construction is expected to begin in a couple of years.
"We're looking at engineering next year with likely building following the year after based on how quickly we can move … there are a number of infrastructure projects in the region,” DiCarlo added.
Windsor-Tecumseh Liberal MP Irek Kusmierczyk along with Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey made the funding announcement Wednesday over Zoom.
The town's contribution for the bridge is $575,000.
