The CEO of Windsor International Airport says travellers have been wondering when they can fly out of Windsor again.
Speaking on AM800's The Dan MacDonald Show, Mark Galvin says the airport has been receiving calls from travellers asking when airlines will fly again.
He says as of now, Air Canada plans to resume operations at the airport the first week of September while Porter and Sunwing remain grounded.
Galvin says the planes used by Air Canada when flying out of Windsor are 50 seaters.
"What I understand from Air Canada is two flights a day at this point in September and accessing demand and increasing those flights up and we await the word from Porter and sort of Sunwing," says Galvin.
He says leisure travellers are itching to get back and fly again.
"We get calls everyday to the airport asking if they can fly, where they can fly to and I certainly let our airline partners know that but again it's a business decision," says Galvin.
Galvin says he has let the airport's airline partners know, travellers are looking to fly again from Windsor.
"The leisure traveller is coming back and they're itching to travel and we're certainly seeing that in the phone calls we get, translating that to passenger traffic I think they'll be a recovery period for sure and it's going to be long," says Galvin. "There's no play book for this, we don't have one."
Commercial flights at Windsor's airport have been grounded since April because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Galvin says increased cleaning has already taken place at the airport along with the installation of sneeze guards at all counters and more hand sanitization stations have been installed.
