Decommissioned five years ago because of vandalism, the washrooms at Mill Street Park in Sandwich Town have reopened.
Ward Two Councillor Fabio Costante says the washrooms were shut down in 2014 and residents, Sandwich St. business owners and fishermen have been asking the city to reopen them.
Costante says the city's parks and recreation department has listened and recently did some alterations to the washrooms, which reopened earlier this week.
"A lot of people go fishing and spend a long part of their day there and so a washroom facility was a huge demand from the community," he says. Whether you're fishing, whether you're talking your dog for a walk or using the park or Queens Dock, it become every year a greater demand for that service. So we're glad that we're able to open it up."
Costante says the washrooms will be open seven days a week.
"The hope now and this is a call out to the community, we've already reached out to quite a few people to keep their eyes on the washrooms, the hope is that they don't get vandalized because we don't want to see them closed again," he says.
He says the city also installed new receptacles for garbage and recycling.
The washrooms are located right in the windmill at Mill Street Park near Queens Dock.
