The Healthy Kids Community Challenge has come to an end.
The city's commissioner of Community Development and Health Services, Jelena Payne says more than 50-thousand children and parents took part in more than 300 healthy activities over the last three years.
"The goal of the campaign was to promote healthy living, healthy lifestyle, healthy activity, healthy eating for our kids in our community," says Payne.
The campaign started in 2013 after the city and Essex County received more than $520,000 from the provincial government and $165,000 from the Erie-St.Clair Local Health Integration Network.
"It's been a ton of activity and ton of engagement with kids and families, community partners, private sector," says Payne. "You know a lot of partnerships have come out of this Healthy Kids Community Challenge for our entire region."
Payne says the challenge may be over but the goal is to keep the community active.
"The partnerships have been developed," Payne. "The investments have been made in tools, equipment, programs, policies, infrastructure in some cases and so the legacy we want to live on."
The challenge has funded refillable water stations throughout Windsor-Essex.
Just under 88,000 water bottles have already been filled.
