It has been a smooth ride for Transit Windsor in its first week back in operation.
Buses hit city streets again on Monday, May 4 after being shut down for over a month, on authority from the mayor to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Since then, buses have been running on an enhanced schedule with a maximum of ten passengers per bus.
Transit Executive Director Pat Delmore says so far, it is working.
"We have got additional buses to kinda cut in whenever our buses reach the maximum number of passengers which is 10 plus some mobility passengers, when we get to that point, we add another bus in and it seems to be working quite well."
Delmore emphasizes the buses are for essential trips only.
"I think people are getting the message. It is important for us to provide social distancing, we are showing where they can sit on the buses and it seems to be working well. I haven't heard of any concerns or issues."
He says ridership is down about 90% which is consistent with other transit services across the country.
"We have been seeing ridership about 2,000 rides a day, over the past couple of days. On average during the month of May, we are used to seeing 20,000 rides per day."
The current schedule will be in operation until May 31.
Riders enter the bus through the back and some seats have been taped off to ensure physical distancing.
There is also enhanced cleaning being done, especially on high touch areas such as handrails and bell chords.
