An event in Windsor to show solidarity for those in war-torn Syria is calling for government action to end the conflict.
The gathering just shy of 100 people at the Caboto Club saw provincial and federal politicians hear the cries for help.
Dr. Amhad Chaker with the Syrian-Canadian Council says "the war is going onto its seventh year and we don't want people to forget about the tragedy. In the beginning we used to count the death toll every week, every month by tens, now hundreds or later on thousands," says Chaker. "It is not exaggerated if we say now 1-million Syrians were killed in the last six years."
"it's important to keep pushing for action and to ensure Canadians know what's going on in Syria," says Chaker. "It is not a civil war. It is a battle between the Syrian people and between a dictator supported by oppression; supported by Russia and Iran and foreign militia."
The event at the Caboto Club was hosted by the Windsor Islamic and Syrian-Canadian Councils.
There was also a small fundraising effort tied to the event through the group Human Concern International, which is raising money to help support medical and other basic needs for people leaving the Syrian capital of Aleppo.
