A deal has been reached between tomato growers and processors.
It follows a breakdown in negotiations earlier this month between the Ontario Processing Vegetable Growers Board and three major tomato processing companies.
As a result of the breakdown, Ontario's minister of agriculture fired the board and appointed a former minister in its place.
Highbury Canco President Sam Diab says it became the best negotiations that he has ever been a part of when dealing with tomatoes.
"In any negotiations, neither side gets everything they want but I think both sides left with a really good feeling," says Diab.
"We are starting seedling planting next week, seed is being delivered to the greenhouses today and tomorrow and things will move quickly. When you are able to reach an agreement and move things forward in a positive and constructive way, all sides come together."
Meanwhile, the provincial Minister of Agriculture is reacting positively to the deal.
"I am pleased that Ontario's Processing Vegetable Growers (OPVG) and our three major tomato processors worked together to reach negotiated agreements for the 2017 growing season," says Minister Jeff Leal.
"I appreciate their hard work during the negotiating process to ensure a deal was reached for the parties involved."
Leal says he looks forward to continuing to follow this matter as all parties continue to discuss long-term solutions and fulfill the directive I issued last August to develop a regulatory framework to achieve reform for the 2018 growing season and beyond.
