A long list of candidates has filed nomination papers to seek office in the upcoming municipal election in Windsor.
A total of 54 people submitted the documents needed before the nomination period for the October 26 election closed at 2 p.m. Friday.
There are 11 candidates for mayor of Windsor, including incumbent Drew Dilkens, who is seeking a fourth term in office, and Ward 1 Councillor Fred Francis.
Because Francis is seeking the mayor’s office, his seat in Ward 1 is up for grabs. There are seven candidates for the ward, including Darcie Renaud, who lost the race to Francis in the last election, along with retired Windsor Police Deputy Chief Frank Providenti and Linda Qin, most recently a trustee on the Greater Essex County District School Board.
There are four candidates in Ward 2, including incumbent Fraizer Fathers, who won a by-election during this most recent term of council to replace Fabio Costanate.
Ward 3 has four candidates, including incumbent Renaldo Agostino.
Ward 4 is up for grabs after Mark McKenzie chose not to seek re-election. Five people are running for the seat, including former councillor Chris Holt, who gave up the seat to challenge Dilkens for mayor in the last election.
Ward 5 is also vacant for the first time in a while as Ed Sleiman steps aside. There are five candidates in the race.
Ward 6 is also vacant for the first time in decades as Jo-Anne Gignac, the only woman on council, is not running again. The list of seven candidates in the race includes the former president of Windsor-Essex PrideFest, Wendi Nicholson.
Ward 7 has three candidates, including incumbent Angelo Marignani.
There are two candidates in Ward 8, including incumbent Gary Kaschak.
Ward 9 also has two candidates, including incumbent Kieran McKenzie.
Ward 10 has four candidates, including incumbent Jim Morrison and challenger Mark Masanovich, who lost to Morrison by 138 votes in the 2022 election.
