A local farmer is reacting to the 2016 census of agriculture.
Lyle Hall is President of the Essex County Federation of Agriculture and says the data reveals the industry is changing.
The report shows an increase in greenhouse growth mainly in Ontario as well as fewer farms but larger ones.
It also shows there are more young people and women in the Ag-farming industry.
Hall says there has been steady greenhouse growth in Leamington.
"Some of that probably has to do with the exchange on the American dollar right now. Most of our product, I was talking to one gentleman, I think he said like 75 percent of the product out of the Leamington area goes south or south of the border," says Hall.
The report shows there were 193,492 farms in Canada in 2016, down 5.9% compared to 2011.
It was the lowest rate of decline in 20 years.
The report also revealed the average farmers age in 2016 was 55-years-old.
In 2011, the average age was 54-years-old.
