The Transportation Safety Board of Canada has launched an investigation into a freighter fire on the Detroit River.
The engine fire on board the MV Tecumseh occurred Sunday at 2pm near Zug Island.
The vessel drifted into Canadian waters and was anchored off Windsor's port.
None of the 16 crew members was hurt.
The TSB will gather information and assess what happened.
Board Spokesperson Dean Campbell says an on scene investigation is underway.
"We have three investigators that have traveled to the freighter to start their assessment of the situation," he says. "They will gather information and collect data on site. Once they have done that they can do an assessment of what next steps might be."
He says every investigation is its own case so it can take anywhere from a day to a couple of days depending on the complexity of the case.
Campbell points out the board will not lay charges in this case.
"The mandate of the Transportation Safety Board is to advance transportation safety so we are not there to assess fault or determine civil or criminal liability. We are there to focus on how to make Canadian transportation safer," says Campbell
The TSB is an independent agency that investigates air, marine, pipeline and rail transportation occurrences.
The freighter was carrying canola seed.
