Testimony has begun in a Windsor murder trial following a shooting nearly four years ago.
Dia Hanan, 36, is charged with second degree murder, attempted murder and two firearms offences stemming from the double shooting on Oak St. on December 23, 2015.
When askesd how he pleaded to the charges, Hanan replied "absolutely not guilty."
In the opening statement presented by Assistant Crown Jayme Lesperance, the jury of two men and twelve women heard a 'road map' of what evidence they will hear over the six week trial.
Court heard two men, 30-year-old Alekesji Guzhavin and Gregory Henriquez, went to Hanan's home to borrow money.
Both victims have criminal records.
During the exchange which took place in Hanan's backyard, shots were fired.
Guzhavin suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died. Henriquez was shot and is paralyzed.
Juror heard Hanan was the only one who had a weapon, a semi-automatic pistol, was recovered by police at the scene.
Hanan was arrested at the scene.
Police received several 9-11 calls about multiple gunshots being fired around 7pm.
The crown intends to call 25 to 30 witnesses during the trial.
